Abby and Jon (of the Allen Lab) hosted the 31st Midwest Microbial Pathogenesis Conference! Opening session photo from Mark Mandel's bluesky. At some point in the planning, Abby decided to make 800 bacteria buttons representing the top 5 most popular species... and a bonus limited 6th, featuring Vibrio fischeri. The lab presented four posters from Rachel, Adam, Millie, and Drew!

Gustavo successfully defended his Masters thesis today! He investigated the possibility of Exotoxin U-encoding P. aeruginosa strains to survive inside of epithelial cells. This spawned a project in T3SS regulation across lab and clinical strains that we didn't see coming and are still wrapping our minds around. We hope to share it with the wider world soon!
We will always remember his parting wisdom: "if you're a graduate student and thinking about getting a cat or dog... get a cat."

Rachel's grant titled "TLR2-mediated discrimination between pathogenic threats and non-threatening bacterial ligands in ocular surface cells" was chosen as the James A. McKechnie award winner from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness! Congratulations, Rachel! And many thanks to ISPB for supporting her research into how ocular surface cells detect threats.

We're reasonably confident Gustavo's thesis and defense this summer is going to go okay, so he was permitted to celebrate early.
So proud of all you have accomplished, Gustavo!
